Acoustic Fencing

Timber Acoustic Fence

It is a commonly thought that acoustic fences must be made of special materials, or thick layers of concrete.  This is a misconception.  The limiting factors of an acoustic barrier are actually its height and its length - not its density.  This is because sound will be diffracted over the top and around the ends of the acoustic barrier, but will not travel through it as long as it has a minimum superficial mass and is contiguous (i.e. has no holes or gaps).  Consequently, light materials (particularly timber) can be equally effective in providing an acoustic barrier.
